How it works

Calculates running pace, finish time, or distance from any two known values. Also predicts finish times for common race distances (5K, 10K, half marathon, marathon) at the given pace.

Formula

Pace = Time ÷ Distance | Time = Pace × Distance | Distance = Time ÷ Pace

Pace
Minutes per km or per mile
Time
Total run duration in seconds
Distance
Run length in km or miles

Step by step

  1. 01Choose what you want to calculate: pace, finish time, or distance.
  2. 02Enter the two known values — distance, time (h / min / sec), or pace (min + sec).
  3. 03Read your result and the equivalent speed in km/h or mph.
  4. 04Check the race prediction table for projected finish times at common distances.

Examples

5 km in 25:00 → pace and race predictions

Pace = 25 min ÷ 5 km = 5:00 /km, equivalent to 12.0 km/h.

Inputs

Calculate:
pace
Distance unit:
km
Distance:
5
Time — hours:
0
Time — minutes:
25
Time — seconds:
0

Result

Result:
5:00 /km
Equivalent speed:
12.0 km/h

Marathon at 5:30 /km → finish time

Time = 5.5 min/km × 42.195 km = 232.07 min ≈ 3:52:04.

Inputs

Calculate:
time
Distance unit:
km
Distance:
42.195
Pace — minutes:
5
Pace — seconds:
30

Result

Result:
3:52:04
Note: Pace and time predictions assume a perfectly even effort throughout the run. Actual race performance varies with terrain, weather, fatigue, and pacing strategy. Half marathon = 21.0975 km / 13.1094 mi; Marathon = 42.195 km / 26.2188 mi.

Frequently asked questions

What is running pace?

Running pace is the time it takes to cover one unit of distance — usually expressed as minutes per kilometer (min/km) or minutes per mile (min/mi). A pace of 5:00 /km means you run one kilometer every five minutes.

How do I calculate my pace from a race result?

Divide your total finish time by the distance. For a 5K finished in 25:00, pace = 25 min ÷ 5 km = 5:00 /km. This calculator does that automatically — select 'Pace', enter your distance and time, and read the result.

What pace do I need to finish a marathon in 4 hours?

A sub-4 hour marathon (42.195 km) requires a pace of about 5:41 /km or 9:09 /mi. Select 'Pace', enter 42.195 km (or 26.22 miles) and a time of 4:00:00 to see the exact target pace.

Are the race time predictions accurate?

They assume a perfectly even effort at the same pace for the full distance. Real races involve warm-up, fatigue, course elevation, and pacing variation, so treat predictions as targets rather than guarantees.
