Quick answer
- 12 groups (A through L), 4 teams each
- 3 matches per team in the group stage
- Top 2 from each group advance (24 teams)
- 8 best third-place teams also advance (8 teams)
- 32 teams total in the Round of 32 knockout stage
Use the World Cup 2026 Group Standings Calculator to build a table from wins, draws, losses, and goals.
Points system
| Result | Points |
|---|---|
| Win | 3 |
| Draw | 1 |
| Loss | 0 |
Each team plays exactly three group games, so the maximum is 9 points (three wins).
Who advances?
Automatic qualifiers (24 teams)
The top two teams in each of the 12 groups go straight to the Round of 32.
Best third-place teams (8 teams)
The remaining 12 third-place teams are ranked in one combined table. The top eight join the knockout round. The other four third-place teams are eliminated.
Rank third-place teams by:
- Points
- Goal difference
- Goals scored
- Fair-play score (fewer cards is better)
- FIFA world ranking (if still tied)
Use the Third-Place Table Ranker to see where a third-place record would rank.
Knockout stage
From the Round of 32 onward, matches are single elimination. Ties after 90 minutes go to 30 minutes of extra time, then penalties if needed.
