Estimates a rideshare fare range (Uber, Lyft, or local equivalent) based on city market, distance, time, service tier, and surge pricing. All figures are illustrative — actual fares depend on real-time pricing set by each platform.
A typical 5-mile UberX ride in a major US city runs roughly $14–22. Applying typical per-mile ($1.50) and per-minute ($0.30) rates to 5 miles and 15 minutes, plus base fare and booking fee, gives a midpoint near $18.

Uber fares are calculated using a base fare (flat fee to start the ride) plus a per-mile charge, a per-minute charge (for time in the vehicle), and a booking fee. Surge pricing multiplies the total when demand exceeds supply. Tolls, airport fees, and tips are added on top.
Surge pricing (dynamic pricing) is a real-time multiplier applied when demand for rides exceeds the number of available drivers in an area. Common triggers include rush hour, bad weather, concerts, and bar closing time. A 2× surge doubles the base fare. You are notified of the surge before you confirm a booking.
Wait 10–15 minutes — surges often dissipate quickly. Walk a few blocks away from a congested venue. Use the scheduled ride feature if you can plan ahead. Check both Uber and Lyft — they surge independently. Non-peak hours (mid-morning, early afternoon) are cheapest.
This calculator uses generalised typical rates for each market — actual fares depend on real-time pricing set by Uber, Lyft, or local equivalents. Fares also vary by specific route (tolls, traffic), driver availability, and platform promotions. Always use the in-app price estimate for an accurate quote before confirming.
